Open Me First

With a little advance planning, you can gather all the first day essentials into one box for easy access. Clearly label this box and make sure it is loaded last so it can be unloaded first. These will be the items you need at hand on the day you move into your new home.

Think about adding the following things to your Open First Box:

telephone and answering machine
tissues, paper towels
plastic utensils, paper plates and cups
quick snacks
screwdriver, hammer, can opener, box cutter
light bulbs
liquid soap
toiletries—toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc.
temporary window coverings—old sheets will work
seasonal clothing

If you may do some simple cooking, pack one pot and pan, a wooden spoon, sharp knife, salt, pepper, plastic storage bags, and dishwashing detergent.

Pack a Kids’ Open First Box containing favorite stuffed animals, snacks, videos, and games. Each child may want to pack and unpack his or her own box.

TIP: Empty out a few dresser drawers and refill with towels, sheets and blankets so you can easily access linens in your new home.
