Preparation
6 to 8 Weeks Before the Move
- Check which expenses will be tax deductible. Keep all receipts in a moving file.
- Begin to sort through belongings, separate into donate, take, yard sale, and give to friends piles. Set a date for the yard sale.
- Update your personal address book with friends and relatives. Take a copy of your phone book when you move.
- Change delivery address for magazines and periodicals.
4 to 6 Weeks Before the Move
- Contact insurance agent to transfer policies to new property
- Advise current school of transfer plans. Enroll children in new school and arrange for transfer of records.
- Set dates with the mover.
- Obtain appraisals on high value items.
- Make a list of people and companies you need to notify and start filling out change of address cards. As you pay monthly bills change the “bill to” address.
2 to 4 Weeks Before the Move
- Obtain medical records from doctor, dentist, optometrist, etc. Arrange to have prescriptions transferred.
- Make travel arrangements. Don’t schedule a flight or settlement for the pack, load or delivery day.
- Notify utilities—gas, phone, electric, water, cable, internet. Leave utilities connected until the day after your move out.
- Contact new utilities. Save on deposits by asking your current utility company to notify the new company of your good credit status or give you a letter of reference.
- Notify and gather records from accountants lawyer, stockbroker, investment counselor.
1 to 2 Weeks Before the Move
- Reserve elevator, if necessary.
- Cancel deliveries and service– paper, trash, cleaning, lawn, garden, oil delivery. Cancel or transfer gym membership.
- Find new home for house plants.
Last Few Day Before Move
- Pick up dry cleaning, return videos, library books, and anything else you may have borrowed.
- Pick up any items that were being repaired, cleaned or stored.
- Clean out refrigerator and freezer.
- If driving, service car for the trip.
- Pack the "Take With" boxes and bags.
- Obtain travelers checks.
- Disassemble outdoor play sets, trampolines, furniture, etc.
- Make childcare arrangement for the children for packing and moving days.
- Change your email address. Consider web-based email if you don’t have a new ISP yet.
